[89] When this was said, Puṇṇa the Koliyan son, the cow-votary, said this to the Blessed One: "Magnificent, venerable sir! Magnificent, venerable sir! Just as, venerable sir, one might set upright what had been overturned, or uncover what had been concealed, or point out the way to one who was lost, or hold up an oil lamp in the darkness so that those with eyes might see forms — even so has the Dhamma been made clear in many ways by the honorable Gotama. Venerable sir, I go to the Blessed One for refuge, and to the Dhamma, and to the Saṅgha of bhikkhus. Let the Blessed One remember me as a lay follower who has gone for refuge, from this day forth, for as long as life lasts."
And the naked ascetic Seniya, the dog-votary, said this to the Blessed One: "Magnificent, venerable sir! Magnificent, venerable sir! Just as, venerable sir, one might set upright what had been overturned, or uncover what had been concealed, or point out the way to one who was lost, or hold up an oil lamp in the darkness so that those with eyes might see forms — even so has the Dhamma been made clear in many ways by the honorable Gotama. Venerable sir, I go to the Blessed One for refuge, and to the Dhamma, and to the Saṅgha of bhikkhus. May I receive, venerable sir, the going forth (pabbajjā) in the presence of the Blessed One; may I receive the higher ordination (upasampadā)."
"Seniya, one who was formerly a member of another sect (aññatitthiyapubba) and who desires the going forth, who desires the higher ordination in this Dhamma and Discipline, lives on probation (parivāsa) for four months. At the end of four months, the bhikkhus, their minds being satisfied, give him the going forth and the higher ordination to the state of a bhikkhu. But I recognize a diversity of individuals in this matter."
