[95] "Venerable sir, when learned nobles, learned brahmins, learned householders, and learned ascetics, having formulated a question, approach the Tathāgata and ask it — has the Blessed One already thought it over beforehand in his mind, 'Those who approach me will ask thus; being asked thus, I shall answer them thus,' or does the answer occur to the Tathāgata on the spot?"
"Well then, prince, I shall question you in return about this very matter; you may answer as seems fitting to you. What do you think, prince? Are you skilled in the parts, great and small, of a chariot?"
"So it is, venerable sir; I am skilled in the parts, great and small, of a chariot."
"What do you think, prince? When people approach you and ask thus, 'What is the name of this part, great or small, of the chariot?' — would you have thought it over beforehand in your mind, 'Those who approach me will ask thus; being asked thus, I shall answer them thus,' or would the answer occur to you on the spot?"
"Venerable sir, I am a well-known charioteer, skilled in the parts, great and small, of a chariot. All the parts, great and small, of a chariot are well known to me. The answer occurs to me on the spot."
"So too, prince, when learned nobles, learned brahmins, learned householders, and learned ascetics, having formulated a question, approach the Tathāgata and ask it, the answer occurs to the Tathāgata on the spot. Why is that? Because, prince, the element of the Dhamma (dhammadhātu) has been thoroughly penetrated by the Tathāgata; and through the thorough penetration of that element of the Dhamma, the answer occurs to the Tathāgata on the spot."
