[99] The venerable Ānanda heard this conversation between the venerable Udāyī and Pañcakaṅga the chamberlain. Then the venerable Ānanda approached the Blessed One, and having approached and paid homage to the Blessed One, he sat down at one side. Sitting at one side, the venerable Ānanda reported to the Blessed One the entire conversation that had taken place between the venerable Udāyī and Pañcakaṅga the chamberlain.
When this was said, the Blessed One said to the venerable Ānanda: "Ānanda, it was a valid exposition (pariyāya) indeed that Pañcakaṅga the chamberlain did not approve of from Udāyī; and it was a valid exposition indeed that Udāyī did not approve of from Pañcakaṅga the chamberlain. Ānanda, two feelings (vedanā) have been spoken of by me by one exposition; three feelings have been spoken of by me by an exposition; four feelings have been spoken of by me by an exposition; five feelings have been spoken of by me by an exposition; six feelings have been spoken of by me by an exposition; eighteen feelings have been spoken of by me by an exposition; thirty-six feelings have been spoken of by me by an exposition; one hundred and eight feelings have been spoken of by me by an exposition. Thus, Ānanda, the Dhamma has been taught by me by way of expositions. When the Dhamma has been thus taught by me by way of expositions, of those who will not concede, will not consent to, will not approve of what is well spoken and well stated by one another, this is to be expected: they will dwell contentious, quarrelsome, given to dispute, wounding one another with verbal daggers. Thus, Ānanda, the Dhamma has been taught by me by way of expositions. When the Dhamma has been thus taught by me by way of expositions, of those who will concede, will consent to, will approve of what is well spoken and well stated by one another, this is to be expected: they will dwell in concord, in mutual appreciation, without disputing, blended like milk and water, regarding one another with kindly eyes."
