[101] When this was said, the brahmin Gaṇakamoggallāna said this to the Blessed One: "When the disciples of the worthy Gotama are thus advised and thus instructed by the worthy Gotama, do they all attain Nibbāna, the ultimate goal (accantaniṭṭha), or do some not attain it?"
"Brahmin, some of my disciples, thus advised and thus instructed by me, attain Nibbāna, the ultimate goal; some do not attain it."
"Worthy Gotama, what is the cause, what is the condition why—when Nibbāna indeed stands, when the path (magga) leading to Nibbāna stands, and when the worthy Gotama stands as the one who rouses them—nevertheless, when the disciples of the worthy Gotama are thus advised and thus instructed by the worthy Gotama, some attain Nibbāna, the ultimate goal, and some do not attain it?"
