[111] "There is indeed, brahmin. By that Blessed One who knows and sees, the Arahant, the Fully Awakened One, a training rule has been laid down for the bhikkhus and the Pātimokkha has been prescribed. On the Uposatha day, as many of us as live in dependence upon a single village district all gather together as one; having gathered, we invite him to whom it pertains [to recite it]. If, while it is being recited, a bhikkhu has an offence, has a transgression, we make him act according to the Dhamma, according to the instruction. Indeed, it is not the good sirs who make us act; it is the Dhamma that makes us act."
"Worthy Ānanda, is there even a single bhikkhu whom you now honor, respect, esteem, and venerate, and upon whom, having honored and respected him, you live in dependence?"
"There is indeed, brahmin, a single bhikkhu whom we now honor, respect, esteem, and venerate, and upon whom, having honored and respected him, we live in dependence."
