[167] The Blessed One said this: "Bhikkhus, here a bhikkhu declares final knowledge (aññā) thus: 'I understand: Birth is destroyed, the holy life has been lived, what had to be done has been done, there is no more of this state of being.' Bhikkhus, that bhikkhu's statement should neither be approved nor rejected. Neither approving nor rejecting it, a question should be put to him: 'Friend, these four kinds of expression (vohāra) have been rightly proclaimed by that Blessed One who knows and sees, the Arahant, the Fully Self-Awakened One. What four? Speaking of the seen with regard to what is seen, speaking of the heard with regard to what is heard, speaking of the sensed with regard to what is sensed, speaking of the cognized with regard to what is cognized. These, friend, are the four kinds of expression rightly proclaimed by that Blessed One who knows and sees, the Arahant, the Fully Self-Awakened One. But knowing how, seeing how, with regard to these four kinds of expression, is the venerable one's mind (citta) liberated from the taints (āsava) through non-clinging?'"
