[187] Furthermore, bhikkhus, an untrue person (asappurisa) is a rag-robe wearer (paṃsukūlika). He reflects thus: 'I am a rag-robe wearer, but these other bhikkhus are not rag-robe wearers.' On account of that rag-robe wearing he exalts himself and disparages others. This too, bhikkhus, is a quality of an untrue person.
But a true person (sappurisa), bhikkhus, reflects thus: 'It is not through rag-robe wearing that states of greed (lobha) go to destruction, or that states of hatred (dosa) go to destruction, or that states of delusion (moha) go to destruction. Even if one is not a rag-robe wearer, yet if he is practicing in accordance with the Dhamma, practicing rightly, conducting himself in conformity with the Dhamma, he is worthy of honor on that account, he is worthy of praise on that account.' Having made the practice itself the essential thing, he neither exalts himself nor disparages others on account of that rag-robe wearing. This too, bhikkhus, is a quality of a true person.
