[194] Bhikkhus, again, furthermore, an untrue person (asappurisa), having completely transcended the base of the infinity of space (ākāsānañcāyatana), [aware that] 'consciousness is infinite,' enters and dwells in the base of the infinity of consciousness (viññāṇañcāyatana). He reflects thus: 'I am a gainer of the attainment (samāpatti) of the base of the infinity of consciousness; but these other bhikkhus are not gainers of the attainment of the base of the infinity of consciousness.' On account of that attainment of the base of the infinity of consciousness he exalts himself and disparages others. This too, bhikkhus, is a quality of an untrue person.
But a true person (sappurisa), bhikkhus, reflects thus: 'Even with regard to the attainment of the base of the infinity of consciousness, non-identification (atammayatā) has been declared by the Blessed One; for in whatever way they conceive it, thereby it turns out otherwise.' Having made non-identification itself the inner essential, he neither exalts himself nor disparages others on account of that attainment of the base of the infinity of consciousness. This too, bhikkhus, is a quality of a true person.
