[27] Bhikkhus, the Tathāgata is one who speaks thus. For the Tathāgata who speaks thus, these ten legitimate grounds for praise (sahadhammikā pāsaṃsaṭṭhānā) follow.
If, bhikkhus, beings experience pleasure and pain because of what was done in the past, then surely, bhikkhus, the Tathāgata was a doer of good deeds in the past, in that he now feels such pleasant feeling (vedanā) free of taints (āsava). If, bhikkhus, beings experience pleasure and pain because of the creation of a Supreme God (issaranimmāna), then surely, bhikkhus, the Tathāgata was created by a good Supreme God, in that he now feels such pleasant feeling free of taints. If, bhikkhus, beings experience pleasure and pain because of circumstance and nature (saṅgatibhāva), then surely, bhikkhus, the Tathāgata is one of good circumstance, in that he now feels such pleasant feeling free of taints. If, bhikkhus, beings experience pleasure and pain because of class of rebirth (abhijāti), then surely, bhikkhus, the Tathāgata is one of good class of rebirth, in that he now feels such pleasant feeling free of taints. If, bhikkhus, beings experience pleasure and pain because of exertion in this present life (diṭṭhadhammūpakkama), then surely, bhikkhus, the Tathāgata is one of good exertion in this present life, in that he now feels such pleasant feeling free of taints.
If, bhikkhus, beings experience pleasure and pain because of what was done in the past, the Tathāgata is praiseworthy; and if beings do not experience pleasure and pain because of what was done in the past, the Tathāgata is praiseworthy. If, bhikkhus, beings experience pleasure and pain because of the creation of a Supreme God, the Tathāgata is praiseworthy; and if beings do not experience pleasure and pain because of the creation of a Supreme God, the Tathāgata is praiseworthy. If, bhikkhus, beings experience pleasure and pain because of circumstance and nature, the Tathāgata is praiseworthy; and if beings do not experience pleasure and pain because of circumstance and nature, the Tathāgata is praiseworthy. If, bhikkhus, beings experience pleasure and pain because of class of rebirth, the Tathāgata is praiseworthy; and if beings do not experience pleasure and pain because of class of rebirth, the Tathāgata is praiseworthy. If, bhikkhus, beings experience pleasure and pain because of exertion in this present life, the Tathāgata is praiseworthy; and if beings do not experience pleasure and pain because of exertion in this present life, the Tathāgata is praiseworthy.
Bhikkhus, the Tathāgata is one who speaks thus; to the Tathāgata who speaks thus these ten legitimate grounds for praise come.
Thus spoke the Blessed One. Elated, those bhikkhus delighted in the Blessed One's words.
The Devadaha Sutta, the first, is finished.
