[283] Now at that time—on that Uposatha day, the fifteenth, the day of the Pavāraṇā, on the night of the full moon—the Blessed One was seated in the open air, surrounded by the Saṅgha of bhikkhus. Then the Blessed One, having surveyed the silent Saṅgha of bhikkhus, addressed the bhikkhus: "Bhikkhus, I am satisfied with this practice (paṭipadā); my mind is satisfied, bhikkhus, with this practice. Therefore, bhikkhus, arouse energy (vīriya) still more abundantly, for the attaining of what has not yet been attained, for the achieving of what has not yet been achieved, for the realizing of what has not yet been realized. I shall wait right here in Sāvatthī for the Komudī full moon of the fourth month."
The bhikkhus of the countryside heard: "It is said that the Blessed One will wait right there in Sāvatthī for the Komudī full moon of the fourth month." And those bhikkhus of the countryside converged upon Sāvatthī to see the Blessed One. And those elder bhikkhus advised and instructed the new bhikkhus still more abundantly: some elder bhikkhus advised and instructed ten bhikkhus; some elder bhikkhus advised and instructed twenty bhikkhus; some elder bhikkhus advised and instructed thirty bhikkhus; some elder bhikkhus advised and instructed forty bhikkhus. And those new bhikkhus, being advised and instructed by the elder bhikkhus, came to know a lofty distinction, each stage successively higher than the one before.
