[295] Bhikkhus, there is a further case. A bhikkhu, when walking, knows clearly, "I am walking"; or when standing, he knows clearly, "I am standing"; or when sitting, he knows clearly, "I am sitting"; or when lying down, he knows clearly, "I am lying down." However his body is disposed, so he knows it accordingly. As he dwells thus, diligent, ardent, and resolute, those memories and thoughts (sarasaṅkappā) connected with the household life are abandoned. With their abandoning, the mind (citta) becomes steadied internally, settles down, becomes unified, and becomes concentrated (samādhi). Thus too, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu develops mindfulness directed to the body (kāyagatā sati).
