[409] "Indeed, Bhūmija, being asked thus and answering thus, you speak in accordance with what I have said, and you do not misrepresent me with what is untrue; you explain in accordance with the Dhamma (dhammassa cānudhammaṃ), and no legitimate ground for criticism arises from any reasonable consequence of your assertion.
Bhūmija, whatever ascetics or brahmins have wrong view, wrong intention, wrong speech, wrong action, wrong livelihood, wrong effort, wrong mindfulness (sati), and wrong concentration (samādhi) — if, having made a wish, they lead the spiritual life (brahmacariya), they are incapable of attaining the fruit; if, having made no wish, they lead the spiritual life, they are incapable of attaining the fruit; if, having both made a wish and made no wish, they lead the spiritual life, they are incapable of attaining the fruit; if, having neither made a wish nor made no wish, they lead the spiritual life, they are incapable of attaining the fruit. Why is that? Because, Bhūmija, that is an irrational (ayoniso) way to attain the fruit."
