[437] When this was said, the venerable Abhiya Kaccāna said to the venerable Anuruddha: "It is good, venerable Anuruddha. The venerable Anuruddha does not speak thus: 'Thus have I heard,' or 'It ought to be thus'; rather, the venerable Anuruddha speaks saying, 'Those deities are even thus; those deities are even such.' Venerable sir, it occurs to me thus: 'Surely the venerable Anuruddha has previously dwelt together with those deities, has previously conversed with them, and has previously engaged in discussion with them.'"
"Certainly, friend Kaccāna, these words have been spoken as a challenge, pressing me closely; nevertheless, I shall answer you. For a long time, friend Kaccāna, I have previously dwelt together with those deities, previously conversed with them, and previously engaged in discussion with them."
