[483] Bhikkhus, it is just as if a gambler (akkhadhutta), by the very first losing throw (kaliggaha), were to lose even his son, lose even his wife, lose even all his property, and furthermore incur bondage himself. Trivial, bhikkhus, is that losing throw whereby the gambler, by the very first losing throw, would lose even his son, lose even his wife, lose even all his property, and furthermore incur bondage himself. But this indeed is a far greater losing throw than that: that the fool, having engaged in misconduct by body, having engaged in misconduct by speech, having engaged in misconduct by mind, with the breaking up of the body, after death, is reborn in a state of deprivation (apāya), a bad destination, the nether world, hell.
Bhikkhus, this is the complete and perfect plane of the fool (bālabhūmi).
