[485] Bhikkhus, if a wise person (paṇḍita) is seated in a council hall, or seated in a street, or seated at a crossroads, and the people there discuss talk pertinent and appropriate to that matter — if, bhikkhus, that wise person is one who abstains from the destruction of life, abstains from taking what is not given, abstains from sexual misconduct, abstains from false speech, and abstains from liquor, wine, and intoxicants that are a basis for heedlessness — then, bhikkhus, it occurs to that wise person thus: 'As to the talk, pertinent and appropriate to that matter, which the people are discussing — those qualities are found in me, and I am seen to possess those qualities.' This, bhikkhus, is the first pleasure and joy that the wise person experiences in this very life.
