[557] "And how, friends, does one not run back to the past? Thinking, 'Such was my eye (cakkhu) in the past, such were forms,' consciousness (viññāṇa) is not bound there by desire and lust (chandarāga). Because consciousness is not bound by desire and lust, one does not delight in that; not delighting in that, one does not run back to the past.
Thinking, 'Such was my ear in the past, such were sounds' … 'Such was my nose in the past, such were odours' … 'Such was my tongue in the past, such were tastes' … 'Such was my body in the past, such were tangibles' … 'Such was my mind (mano) in the past, such were mind-objects (dhammā),' consciousness is not bound there by desire and lust. Because consciousness is not bound by desire and lust, one does not delight in that; not delighting in that, one does not run back to the past.
It is thus, friends, that one does not run back to the past."
