[580] When he had sat down to one side, the brahmin student Subha, Todeyya's son, said this to the Blessed One: "Master Gotama, what is the cause, what is the condition, why, even among human beings, among those born as humans, inferiority and superiority are seen? For, Master Gotama, humans are seen who are short-lived and are seen who are long-lived; are seen who have much illness and are seen who have little illness; are seen who are ugly and are seen who are beautiful; are seen who are of little influence and are seen who are of great influence; are seen who are of little wealth and are seen who are of great wealth; are seen who are of low family and are seen who are of high family; are seen who are of little wisdom and are seen who are wise. What, then, Master Gotama, is the cause, what is the condition, why, even among human beings, among those born as humans, inferiority and superiority are seen?"
