[603] The Blessed One said this: "Ānanda, these four individuals exist and are found in the world. Which four?
(1) Here, Ānanda, a certain individual in this world kills living beings, takes what is not given, engages in sexual misconduct, speaks falsehood, speaks divisively, speaks harshly, indulges in idle chatter, is covetous, has a mind of ill will (byāpannacitta), and holds wrong view. With the breakup of the body, after death, he reappears in a state of deprivation, a bad destination, a place of ruin, hell.
(2) But here, Ānanda, a certain individual in this world kills living beings, takes what is not given, engages in sexual misconduct, speaks falsehood, speaks divisively, speaks harshly, indulges in idle chatter, is covetous, has a mind of ill will, and holds wrong view. With the breakup of the body, after death, he reappears in a good destination, a heavenly world.
(3) Here, Ānanda, a certain individual in this world abstains from killing living beings, abstains from taking what is not given, abstains from sexual misconduct, abstains from false speech, abstains from divisive speech, abstains from harsh speech, abstains from idle chatter, is uncovetous, has a mind without ill will, and holds right view. With the breakup of the body, after death, he reappears in a good destination, a heavenly world.
(4) But here, Ānanda, a certain individual in this world abstains from killing living beings, abstains from taking what is not given, abstains from sexual misconduct, abstains from false speech, abstains from divisive speech, abstains from harsh speech, abstains from idle chatter, is uncovetous, has a mind without ill will, and holds right view. With the breakup of the body, after death, he reappears in a state of deprivation, a bad destination, a place of ruin, hell.
