[618] The Blessed One said this: "The six internal sense bases (āyatana) should be understood; the six external sense bases should be understood; the six classes of consciousness (viññāṇa) should be understood; the six classes of contact (phassa) should be understood; the eighteen mental explorations (manopavicāra) should be understood; the thirty-six positions of beings (sattapada) should be understood. Therein, relying on this, abandon this. There are three establishments of mindfulness (satipaṭṭhāna) that the Noble One cultivates — cultivating which, the Noble One is a Teacher fit to instruct a group. He is called, among trainers (yoggācariya), the supreme charioteer of persons to be tamed." This is the summary of the Exposition of the Six Sense Bases (Saḷāyatanavibhaṅga).
