[738] Then, not long after the venerable Sāriputta and the venerable Ānanda had departed, the householder Anāthapiṇḍika died and was reborn in the Tusita host. Then, when the night was far advanced, the young deva (devaputta) Anāthapiṇḍika, of surpassing beauty, illuminating the whole of Jeta's Grove, approached the Blessed One; having approached and paid homage to the Blessed One, he stood to one side. Standing to one side, the young deva Anāthapiṇḍika addressed the Blessed One in verses:
"This Jeta's Grove is beneficial,
frequented by the community of seers,
dwelt in by the King of Dhamma,
a source of rapture (pīti) for me.
Action (kamma), true knowledge (vijjā), and dhammas,
virtue, the supreme livelihood —
by these are mortals purified,
not by clan nor by wealth.
Therefore indeed a wise person,
seeing his own good,
should wisely investigate the Dhamma;
thus is one purified therein.
Sāriputta indeed — in wisdom,
in virtue, and in peace —
whatever bhikkhu has gone beyond
could at best be his equal."
Thus spoke the young deva Anāthapiṇḍika, and the Teacher approved. Then the young deva Anāthapiṇḍika, [knowing] "The Teacher approves of me," paid homage to the Blessed One and, keeping him on his right, vanished right there.
