[855] Then the Blessed One, knowing that the student Uttara, pupil of the brahmin Pārāsiriya, was sitting silent, dismayed, with drooping shoulders, head down, brooding, at a loss for a reply, addressed the Venerable Ānanda: "Ānanda, the brahmin Pārāsiriya teaches the development of the faculties (indriyabhāvanā) to his disciples in one way; but in the discipline of the Noble One the unsurpassed development of the faculties is quite otherwise."
"It is the time for this, Blessed One; it is the time for this, Sublime One (sugata) — that the Blessed One should teach the unsurpassed development of the faculties in the discipline of the Noble One. Having heard it from the Blessed One, the bhikkhus will remember it."
"Then, Ānanda, listen and attend carefully; I will speak." "Yes, venerable sir," the Venerable Ānanda replied to the Blessed One.
