Āneñjasappāyasutta

Suttapiṭaka · Majjhimanikāya · Vol. 14 · Section 92

[92] "Here, Ānanda, a noble disciple reflects thus: 'Whatever sensual pleasures there are in this present life and whatever sensual pleasures there are in lives to come; whatever perceptions of sensual pleasures there are in this present life and whatever perceptions of sensual pleasures there are in lives to come; whatever forms (rūpa) there are in this present life and whatever forms there are in lives to come; whatever perceptions of forms there are in this present life and whatever perceptions of forms there are in lives to come; whatever perceptions of the imperturbable (āneñjasaññā), whatever perceptions of the base of nothingness (ākiñcaññāyatanasaññā), and whatever perceptions of the base of neither-perception-nor-non-perception (nevasaññānāsaññāyatanasaññā) — that is personal existence (sakkāya), as far as personal existence extends. But this is the deathless (amata), namely, the liberation (vimokkha) of the mind (citta) through not clinging.' "Thus indeed, Ānanda, I have taught the way of practice (paṭipadā) conducive to the imperturbable; I have taught the way of practice conducive to the base of nothingness; I have taught the way of practice conducive to the base of neither-perception-nor-non-perception; I have taught the crossing over of the flood (ogha) by relying on one support after another — the noble liberation. Whatever, Ānanda, should be done by a teacher who seeks the welfare of his disciples, who is compassionate, out of compassion — that has been done by me for you. There, Ānanda, are the roots of trees; there are empty dwellings. Meditate, Ānanda; do not be negligent; do not be remorseful later. This is our instruction to you." Thus spoke the Blessed One. Elated, the venerable Ānanda rejoiced in the Blessed One's words. The Āneñjasappāya Sutta, the sixth, is finished.
