[2] Standing to one side, that deity (devatā) said this to the Blessed One: "How, dear sir, did you cross the flood (ogha)?"
"Not halting, friend, and not straining, I crossed the flood."
"But in what way, dear sir, did you cross the flood, not halting and not straining?"
"When I halted, friend, then I sank; when I strained, then I was swept away. Thus it is, friend, that not halting and not straining I crossed the flood."
"After a long time at last I see
a brahmin fully quenched (parinibbuta),
who, not halting, not straining,
has crossed over attachment (visattikā) in the world."
