[275] Standing to one side, the devaputta Anāthapiṇḍika spoke these verses in the presence of the Blessed One:
"This indeed is that Jetavana, frequented by the community of seers (isi),
dwelt in by the King of Dhamma (dhammarāja) — a source of rapture (pīti) for me.
Action (kamma), true knowledge (vijjā), and Dhamma, virtue (sīla), the supreme life —
by this are mortals purified, not by clan or by wealth.
Therefore indeed a wise person, discerning his own good,¹
should carefully investigate the Dhamma; thus he is purified therein.
Sāriputta alone [is foremost] in wisdom, in virtue, and in peace (upasama);
even a bhikkhu who has gone beyond (pāragata) could at most be only his equal."
This is what the devaputta Anāthapiṇḍika said. Having said this, he paid homage to the Blessed One and, having circumambulated him keeping his right side towards him, vanished right there.
