[327] When this was said, King Pasenadi of Kosala said to the Blessed One: "Excellent, venerable sir! Excellent, venerable sir! Just as, venerable sir, one might set upright what has been overturned, or uncover what has been concealed, or point out the path to one who has gone astray, or hold up an oil lamp in the darkness, thinking, 'Those who have eyes will see forms' — even so has the Dhamma been made clear by the Blessed One in many ways. Venerable sir, I go for refuge (saraṇa) to the Blessed One, and to the Dhamma, and to the Saṅgha of bhikkhus (bhikkhusaṅgha). Let the Blessed One remember me[1] as a lay follower (upāsaka) who has gone for refuge from this day forth, for as long as life lasts."
