[369] Then, in the morning, a number of bhikkhus dressed, took their bowls and robes, and entered Sāvatthī for alms. When they had walked for alms in Sāvatthī and had returned from the alms round after the meal, they approached the Blessed One; having approached, they paid homage to the Blessed One and sat down to one side.
Sitting to one side, those bhikkhus said this to the Blessed One: "Here, venerable sir, King Ajātasattu Vedehiputta of Magadha, having mustered a fourfold army, marched against King Pasenadi of Kosala toward Kāsi. King Pasenadi of Kosala heard, venerable sir: 'King Ajātasattu Vedehiputta of Magadha, it is said, having mustered a fourfold army, has marched against me toward Kāsi.' Then, venerable sir, King Pasenadi of Kosala, having mustered a fourfold army, marched out to counter King Ajātasattu Vedehiputta of Magadha toward Kāsi. Then, venerable sir, King Ajātasattu Vedehiputta of Magadha and King Pasenadi of Kosala fought a battle. And in that battle, venerable sir, [1] Ajātasattu Vedehiputta defeated King Pasenadi of Kosala; and King Pasenadi of Kosala, defeated, retreated to Sāvatthī, his very own capital."
