[432] Then Māra the Evil One (pāpimā), desiring to arouse fear, trepidation, and horripilation in the Blessed One, conjured up the form of a great serpent king and approached the Blessed One. Just as a great boat hollowed out of a single tree, such was its body. Just as a great brewer's mat, such was its hood. Just as a great Kosalan bronze dish, such were its eyes. Just as streaks of lightning flash forth when the sky rumbles, so its tongue darted forth from its mouth. Just as the sound of a smith's bellows being blown, such was the sound of its breathing in and out.
