[559] Thus have I heard.
On one occasion the Blessed One, soon after his first full awakening, was dwelling at Uruvelā on the bank of the river Nerañjarā, at the foot of the Ajapāla Banyan Tree.
Then, while the Blessed One was alone, withdrawn in seclusion, a reflection arose in his mind thus: "One who is without reverence (agārava) and without deference dwells in suffering (dukkha). Now what ascetic or brahmin could I honor, respect, and dwell in dependence upon?"
