[596] At Sāvatthī. … Now on that occasion the **bhikkhu** Kokālika was afflicted, suffering, gravely ill.
Then, when the night was far advanced, Tudu the independent brahmā (paccekabrahmā), of surpassing beauty, illuminating the entire Jetavana, approached the bhikkhu Kokālika; and having approached, standing in the air, he said this to the bhikkhu Kokālika: "Kokālika, make your mind (citta) confident in Sāriputta and Moggallāna. Sāriputta and Moggallāna are well-behaved."
"Who are you, friend?"
"I am Tudu the independent brahmā."
"What, friend — were you declared by the Blessed One to be a non-returner (anāgāmī)? How then have you come here? See how far you have erred in this!"
