"The fool thinks he has won
when he speaks harsh words;
but victory indeed is his —
the patient endurance (titikkhā) of one who understands.
For him it thereby turns out worse —
for the one who returns anger upon one who is angry;
not returning anger upon the angry one,
he wins a battle hard to win.
He fares for the welfare of both —
his own and the other's —
who, knowing the other to be enraged,
mindfully (sato) grows calm.
While he is healing both —
himself and the other —
people think, 'He is a fool' —
those who are unskilled in the Dhamma."
