[713] Setting at Sāvatthī. Then the brahmin Mātuposaka, "the Mother-Supporter," approached the Blessed One; having approached, he exchanged greetings with the Blessed One, and when he had concluded the cordial talk worth recalling, he sat down to one side. Sitting to one side, the brahmin Mātuposaka said this to the Blessed One: "Master Gotama, I seek almsfood (bhikkhā) righteously (dhammena); having sought almsfood righteously, I support my mother and father. In acting thus, Master Gotama, am I one who does his duty?"
"Certainly, brahmin, in acting thus you have done your duty. One who seeks almsfood righteously, brahmin, and who, having sought almsfood righteously, supports his mother and father, generates much merit (puñña)."
