[734] Then the Venerable Vaṅgīsa, having by himself aroused remorse (vippaṭisāra) in himself, on that occasion recited these verses:
"Give up conceit (māna), O Gotama!
Give up the pathway of conceit here —
be released without remainder from the pathway of conceit here;
too long have you been filled with remorse.
People smeared by denigration (makkha),
slain by conceit, fall into hell (niraya);
people sorrow for a long time,
slain by conceit, when reborn in hell.
For never at any time does a bhikkhu sorrow
who is victorious by the path (magga), practising rightly;
he experiences both fame and happiness;
him who is truly such they call 'a seer of the Dhamma.'
Therefore, free of barrenness (khila) here, endowed with striving (padhāna),
purified, having abandoned the hindrances (nīvaraṇa),
and having abandoned conceit without remainder,
be an end-maker by true knowledge (vijjā) — one who is at peace."
