[740] Then the Venerable Vaṅgīsa extolled the Blessed One to his face with fitting verses:
"One should speak only such speech
by which one would not torment oneself
nor cause injury to others:
that speech truly is well spoken.
One should speak only pleasant speech,
speech that is welcomed with delight;
that which, taking up nothing evil,
one speaks as pleasant to others.
Truth indeed is deathless speech:
this is an ancient principle;
in truth, in the beneficial, and in the Dhamma —
so they say — the good stand established.
The speech that the Buddha speaks,
secure for the attainment of Nibbāna,
for making an end of suffering (dukkha) —
that truly is the foremost of words."
