[864] The Blessed One said this: "Bhikkhus, once in the past a battle between the devas and the asuras was set in array. Then, bhikkhus, Sakka, lord of the devas (devānam inda), addressed the devas of Tāvatiṃsa: 'If, dear sirs (mārisā), for the devas who have gone into battle there should arise fear, or trepidation (chambhitatta), or horripilation (lomahaṃsa), at that time you should look up at the crest of my own banner (dhajagga). For when you are looking up at the crest of my banner, whatever fear, or trepidation, or horripilation there will be will be abandoned. If you should not look up at the crest of my banner, then you should look up at the crest of the banner of the deva-king (devarāja) Pajāpati. For when you are looking up at the crest of the banner of the deva-king Pajāpati, whatever fear, or trepidation, or horripilation there will be will be abandoned. If you should not look up at the crest of the banner of the deva-king Pajāpati, then you should look up at the crest of the banner of the deva-king Varuṇa. For when you are looking up at the crest of the banner of the deva-king Varuṇa, whatever fear, or trepidation, or horripilation there will be will be abandoned. If you should not look up at the crest of the banner of the deva-king Varuṇa, then you should look up at the crest of the banner of the deva-king Īsāna. For when you are looking up at the crest of the banner of the deva-king Īsāna, whatever fear, or trepidation, or horripilation there will be will be abandoned.'
"But, bhikkhus, for those looking up at the crest of the banner of Sakka, lord of the devas, or looking up at the crest of the banner of the deva-king Pajāpati, or looking up at the crest of the banner of the deva-king Varuṇa, or looking up at the crest of the banner of the deva-king Īsāna, whatever fear, or trepidation, or horripilation there will be might be abandoned, or it might not be abandoned. For what reason? Because, bhikkhus, Sakka, lord of the devas, is not free from lust (rāga), not free from hatred (dosa), not free from delusion (moha); he is timid, given to trepidation, given to terror, and given to flight."
