[88] Then another deity (devatā) spoke these verses in the presence of the Blessed One:
"That very thing of which the miser (maccharī), afraid, does not give —
that itself is the danger for the one who does not give.
The hunger and thirst of which the miser is afraid
touch that very fool in this world and in the next.
Therefore, having dispelled stinginess (macchera),
the conqueror of stain (mala) should give a gift (dāna):
merits (puñña) are the support of living beings
in the world beyond."
