[933] Setting at Sāvatthī.
Bhikkhus, once in the past Sakka, lord of the devas (devānaminda), addressed Mātali the charioteer (saṅgāhaka): "Harness the chariot of thoroughbreds (ājaññaratha) with its team of a thousand, dear Mātali; let us go to the park grounds to see the beautiful landscape." "Yes, your lordship," bhikkhus, Mātali the charioteer assented to Sakka, lord of the devas; and having harnessed the chariot of thoroughbreds with its team of a thousand, he announced to Sakka, lord of the devas: "Dear sir (mārisa), your chariot of thoroughbreds with its team of a thousand stands harnessed; you may go at whatever time you think fit." Then, bhikkhus, as Sakka, lord of the devas, was descending from the Vejayanta Palace, he raised his joined palms in reverence (añjali) and worshipped the Blessed One.
