[957] The Blessed One said this: "Bhikkhus, once in the past Sakka, lord of the devas (devānaminda), conciliating the devas of Tāvatiṃsa in the Sudhammā assembly hall, on that occasion recited this verse:
'Let not anger overpower you;
do not be angry at those who are angry.
Non-anger and harmlessness
dwell always in the noble ones;¹
but anger crushes the evil person
like a mountain.'"
The Sakka Pentad (sakkapañcaka).
Its summary (uddāna):
Ghatvā, Dubbaṇṇiya, Māyā,
with Accaya, and Akkodhana —
this Sakka Pentad was taught
by the supreme Buddha.
The Sakka Saṃyutta is completed.
¹ [Apparatus] The Burmese edition (M.) reads "ca paṭipadā" ("and [these are] the way of practice [among the noble ones]") in place of "vasatī sadā."
