[152] What are the five perils and enmities that have been stilled? Householder, one who destroys life (pāṇātipāta), on account of the destruction of life, generates peril and enmity pertaining to the present life, generates peril and enmity pertaining to the life to come, and experiences mental pain and grief as well; for one who abstains from the destruction of life, that peril and enmity is thus stilled. Householder, one who takes what is not given (adinnādāna), on account of taking what is not given, generates peril and enmity pertaining to the present life, generates peril and enmity pertaining to the life to come, and experiences mental pain and grief as well; for one who abstains from taking what is not given, that peril and enmity is thus stilled. Householder, one who engages in sexual misconduct (kāmesumicchācāra), on account of sexual misconduct, generates peril and enmity pertaining to the present life, generates peril and enmity pertaining to the life to come, and experiences mental pain and grief as well; for one who abstains from sexual misconduct, that peril and enmity is thus stilled. Householder, one who speaks falsely (musāvāda), on account of false speech, generates peril and enmity pertaining to the present life, generates peril and enmity pertaining to the life to come, and experiences mental pain and grief as well; for one who abstains from false speech, that peril and enmity is thus stilled. Householder, one who indulges in liquor, wine, and intoxicants that are a basis for heedlessness (surāmerayamajjapamādaṭṭhāna), on account of indulging in liquor, wine, and intoxicants that are a basis for heedlessness, generates peril and enmity pertaining to the present life, generates peril and enmity pertaining to the life to come, and experiences mental pain and grief as well; for one who abstains from liquor, wine, and intoxicants that are a basis for heedlessness, that peril and enmity is thus stilled. These are the five perils and enmities that have been stilled.
