[17] "And what, bhikkhus, is ignorance (avijjā)? That which, bhikkhus, is not knowing suffering (dukkha), not knowing the origin of suffering, not knowing the cessation of suffering, not knowing the way of practice leading to the cessation of suffering — this, bhikkhus, is called ignorance.
"Thus, bhikkhus, with ignorance as condition, volitional formations (saṅkhārā) [come to be]; with volitional formations as condition, consciousness … Such is the origin of this entire mass of suffering."
