[457] The Blessed One said this: "Bhikkhus, this round of rebirth (saṃsāra) is without discoverable beginning. A first point is not discerned of beings, hindered by ignorance (avijjā) and fettered by craving (taṇhā), running on and wandering in the round of rebirth. Bhikkhus, in the past the designation 'Pācīnavaṃsa' arose for this Mount Vepulla. At that time, bhikkhus, the designation 'Tivarā' arose for the human beings. Bhikkhus, the Tivara people had a lifespan of forty thousand years. The Tivara people, bhikkhus, ascended Mount Pācīnavaṃsa in four days and descended in four days. Now at that time, bhikkhus, the Blessed One Kakusandha, an Arahant, a Perfectly Awakened One, had arisen in the world. The Blessed One Kakusandha, bhikkhus, the Arahant, the Perfectly Awakened One, had a pair of disciples named Vidhūra and Sañjīva, a chief and excellent pair. See, bhikkhus: that very designation for this mountain has vanished, those people have died, and that Blessed One has attained final Nibbāna. So impermanent, bhikkhus, are formations (saṅkhārā); so unstable, bhikkhus, are formations; so unconsoling, bhikkhus, are formations. It is enough, bhikkhus, to become disenchanted with all formations, enough to become dispassionate toward them, enough to be liberated from them."
