[468] "And how, friend, is one ardent (ātāpī)?
"Here, friend, a bhikkhu exerts ardor, thinking: 'Evil, unwholesome states (akusalā dhammā) that have not yet arisen in me, if they were to arise, would lead to harm.' He exerts ardor, thinking: 'Evil, unwholesome states that have arisen in me, if they were not abandoned, would lead to harm.' He exerts ardor, thinking: 'Wholesome states that have not yet arisen in me, if they were not to arise, would lead to harm.' He exerts ardor, thinking: 'Wholesome states that have arisen in me, if they were to cease, would lead to harm.'
"It is in this way, friend, that one is ardent."
