[491] "Venerable sir, whoever has faith (saddhā) in wholesome qualities (kusalā dhammā), has moral shame (hiri) in wholesome qualities, has moral dread (ottappa) in wholesome qualities, has energy in wholesome qualities, has wisdom (paññā) in wholesome qualities — for that person, whatever night or day comes, only growth in wholesome qualities is to be expected, not decline. Just as, venerable sir, in the bright fortnight of the moon, whatever night or day comes, it only increases in beauty, increases in roundness, increases in radiance, increases in height and breadth — even so, venerable sir, whoever has faith in wholesome qualities, has moral shame … has moral dread … has energy … has wisdom in wholesome qualities — for that person, whatever night or day comes, only growth in wholesome qualities is to be expected, not decline. That a person is one with faith, venerable sir: this is a case of non-decline. That a person is one with moral shame, venerable sir: this is a case of non-decline. That a person is one with moral dread, venerable sir: this is a case of non-decline. That a person is one with energy aroused, venerable sir: this is a case of non-decline. That a person is one who is wise, venerable sir: this is a case of non-decline. That a person is one free from anger, venerable sir: this is a case of non-decline. That a person is one free from resentment, venerable sir: this is a case of non-decline. That there are bhikkhus who give exhortation, venerable sir: this is a case of non-decline."
