[51] When this was said, the naked ascetic Kassapa said this to the Blessed One: "Magnificent, venerable sir! Magnificent, venerable sir! Just as, venerable sir, one might set upright what had been overturned … so that those with eyes might see forms, even so has the Dhamma been made clear by the Blessed One in many ways. I go for refuge to the Blessed One, and to the Dhamma, and to the Saṅgha of bhikkhus (bhikkhu). May I receive, venerable sir, the going forth (pabbajjā) in the Blessed One's presence; may I receive the higher ordination (upasampadā)."
"Kassapa, one formerly of another sect (aññatitthiyapubba) who desires the going forth in this Dhamma and Discipline, who desires the higher ordination, lives on probation (parivāsa) for four months. At the end of four months, when he has completed the probation, the bhikkhus, their minds satisfied, if they so wish, give him the going forth and give him the higher ordination to the state of a bhikkhu. But individual differences among persons have been discerned by me."
"If, venerable sir, those formerly of other sects, desiring the going forth in this Dhamma and Discipline, desiring the higher ordination, live on probation for four months, and at the end of four months, when they have completed the probation, the bhikkhus, their minds satisfied, if they so wish, give them the going forth and give them the higher ordination to the state of a bhikkhu — then I will live on probation for four years. At the end of four years, when I have completed the probation, let the bhikkhus, their minds satisfied, give me the going forth and give me the higher ordination to the state of a bhikkhu."
