[518] On one occasion the Venerable Mahākassapa was dwelling at Rājagaha, in the Bamboo Grove (Veḷuvana), the Squirrels' Feeding Ground (Kalandakanivāpa). Now on that occasion the Venerable Ānanda was wandering on tour in Dakkhiṇāgiri together with a large Saṅgha of bhikkhus. And on that occasion some thirty bhikkhus who were pupils (saddhivihārī) of the Venerable Ānanda, most of them mere youths, had renounced the training and returned to the lower life.
