[54] Sitting to one side, the wanderer Timbarukkha said this to the Blessed One: "How is it, Master Gotama — are pleasure and pain (sukhadukkha) made by oneself?"
"Do not say so, Timbarukkha," the Blessed One said.
"Then, Master Gotama, are pleasure and pain made by another?"
"Do not say so, Timbarukkha," the Blessed One said.
"How is it then, Master Gotama — are pleasure and pain made both by oneself and by another?"
"Do not say so, Timbarukkha," the Blessed One said.
"Then, Master Gotama, have pleasure and pain arisen fortuitously, being made neither by oneself nor by another?"
"Do not say so, Timbarukkha," the Blessed One said.
"How is it then, Master Gotama — is there no pleasure and pain?"
"It is not that there is no pleasure and pain, Timbarukkha; there is pleasure and pain, Timbarukkha."
"Then Master Gotama neither knows nor sees pleasure and pain?"
"It is not that I do not know, do not see pleasure and pain, Timbarukkha. I know pleasure and pain, Timbarukkha; I see pleasure and pain, Timbarukkha."
"When asked, 'How is it, Master Gotama — are pleasure and pain made by oneself?' you say, 'Do not say so, Timbarukkha.' When asked, 'Then, Master Gotama, are pleasure and pain made by another?' you say, 'Do not say so, Timbarukkha.' When asked, 'How is it, Master Gotama — are pleasure and pain made both by oneself and by another?' you say, 'Do not say so, Timbarukkha.' When asked, 'Then, Master Gotama, have pleasure and pain arisen fortuitously, being made neither by oneself nor by another?' you say, 'Do not say so, Timbarukkha.' When asked, 'How is it, Master Gotama — is there no pleasure and pain?' you say, 'It is not that there is no pleasure and pain, Timbarukkha; there is pleasure and pain, Timbarukkha.' When asked, 'Then Master Gotama neither knows nor sees pleasure and pain?' you say, 'It is not that I do not know, do not see pleasure and pain, Timbarukkha. I know pleasure and pain, Timbarukkha; I see pleasure and pain, Timbarukkha.' Let Master Gotama declare pleasure and pain to me; let Master Gotama teach me pleasure and pain."
