[544] "'The hunter' (luddo), bhikkhus: this is a designation of Māra the Evil One. 'The harpoon' (papatā), bhikkhus: this is a designation of gain, honor, and praise (lābhasakkārasiloka). 'The cord' (suttaka), bhikkhus: this is a designation of delight and lust (nandirāga). Bhikkhus, whatever bhikkhu relishes and longs for arisen gain, honor, and praise — this bhikkhu, bhikkhus, is said to have met with calamity through the harpoon, to have met with disaster, and the Evil One may do with him as he wishes. So dreadful, bhikkhus, is gain, honor, and praise … Thus indeed, bhikkhus, should you train yourselves." The third.
