[546] Bhikkhus, suppose a long-haired ewe were to enter a thicket of thorns: she would get snagged here and there, be caught here and there, be entangled here and there, and here and there would meet with calamity and disaster. In just the same way, bhikkhus, here a certain bhikkhu, overcome by gain, honor, and fame (lābhasakkārasiloka), his mind (citta) consumed by it, dresses in the morning and, taking bowl and robe, enters a village or a town for alms. There he gets snagged here and there, is caught here and there, is entangled here and there, and here and there meets with calamity and disaster. So terrible, bhikkhus, is gain, honor, and fame … Thus, bhikkhus, should you train yourselves.
