[558] Bhikkhus, here I see a certain person overwhelmed by honor (sakkāra), his mind (citta) consumed by it, who, with the breakup of the body, after death, has been reborn in a state of deprivation, a bad destination, the lower realm, hell. And here, bhikkhus, I see a certain person overwhelmed by dishonor (asakkāra), his mind consumed by it, who, with the breakup of the body, after death, has been reborn in a state of deprivation, a bad destination, the lower realm, hell. And here, bhikkhus, I see a certain person overwhelmed by both honor and dishonor, his mind consumed by both, who, with the breakup of the body, after death, has been reborn in a state of deprivation, a bad destination, the lower realm, hell. So severe, bhikkhus, are gain, honor, and fame … Thus, bhikkhus, should you train yourselves.
