[561] Bhikkhus, here, having encompassed his mind (citta) with my own mind, I understand a certain person thus: "This venerable one would not speak a deliberate lie even for the sake of a golden bowl filled with silver powder." Then at a later time I see him — overwhelmed by gain, honor, and fame (lābhasakkārasiloka), his mind overcome — speaking a deliberate lie. So dreadful, bhikkhus, is gain, honor, and fame … Thus indeed, bhikkhus, should you train yourselves.
