[570] Bhikkhus, a faithful female lay follower (upāsikā), rightly imploring her one dear and beloved little son, would implore him thus: "Dear, be like Citta the householder and Hatthaka Āḷavaka." This, bhikkhus, is the scale, this is the measure for my lay follower (upāsaka) disciples, namely, Citta the householder and Hatthaka Āḷavaka. "But if, dear, you go forth from the household life into homelessness, then, dear, be like Sāriputta and Moggallāna." This, bhikkhus, is the scale, this is the measure for my bhikkhu disciples, namely, Sāriputta and Moggallāna. "And, dear, may gain, honor, and fame not come upon you while you are still a trainee (sekha) who has not attained the goal of the mind!" If, bhikkhus, gain, honor, and fame come upon a bhikkhu who is a trainee who has not attained the goal of the mind, it becomes an obstacle for him. So dreadful, bhikkhus, is gain, honor, and fame … . Thus indeed, bhikkhus, should you train yourselves.
